In this section you can find information on how to apply for the following benefits:
Career Development Loan
You can get an application pack from your local Jobcentre Plus office or any college. You can also order a pack by calling the Career Development Loan information line on 0800 585 505 (8.00 am to 10.00 pm, seven days a week).
The pack gives full details on:
who's eligible;
application forms;
when to apply;
checking the course and provider are right for you; and working out how much to borrow and choosing the right deal.
Job Grant
You’ll automatically get Job Grant so long as you're eligible. You just need to make sure you tell your Jobcentre Plus Office that you’re starting work. You’ll be paid in the same way as you were paid benefits.
Jobseeker's Allowance
You can get a claim form at your local Jobcentre Plus office. You’ll get a claim form, which you’ll be asked to bring to a ‘New Jobseeker Interview’.
An adviser will explain how Jobseeker's Allowance works and draw up a ‘Jobseeker’s Agreement’ with you, showing:
your availability for work
the kind of work you want and how you’ll look for it;
how you might improve your chances of finding a job; and
help and support you’ll get.
You’ll confirm your claim in person every two weeks, and your situation will be reviewed at regular interviews.
Mortgage Interest Run On
You don’t need to make a written claim for Mortgage Interest Run On.
Just let your benefits office know as soon as you are starting work which is expected to last for five weeks or more.
New Deal for Jobseekers
Everyone on New Deal gets a personal adviser who is their point of contact throughout the programme. The personal adviser takes the time to understand you - your experiences, interests and goals - so a plan can be prepared to get you into a suitable job.
Contact New Deal on 0845 606 2626, 7.00 am to 11.00 pm, seven days a week; or textphone 0845 606 0680.
Statutory Sick Pay
To get Statutory Sick Pay, you must tell your employer that you’re sick no later than seven days after you first became ill.
Your employer can’t insist that you tell them in person, or that you contact them more than once a week while you’re ill. You can write a letter explaining that you’re sick (the postmark is taken as the date you informed them).
Or complete Form SC2 ‘Employee’s Statement of Sickness’. You can get this from your doctor’s surgery or download it from the HM Revenue & Customs website.
You don’t have to give medical evidence when you first become sick. But if you’re sick for more than seven days (including weekends and bank holidays), your employer may ask for a sick note from your doctor or hospital.
