Adaptations

Adaptations to homes range from simple equipment, such as ramps and grab rails, through to major structural changes, for example extensions, and changes to stairways to allow the fitting of stair lifts.  For those minor changes, housing authorities have an obligation to provide grants to meet the purpose of enabling you, a Disabled Person, basic access to your home.  The amount awarded is at the discretion of the Authority.

Disabled Facilities Grants are available for the more major adaptations you may require.  The amount awarded will cover anywhere between 0 and 100% of the cost of the adaptations, and will be determined by a means test.  The maximum award is £25,000.

Home repair assistance is also available through your local Housing Authority.  This is a discretionary grant to cover work that may be needed on your home.

The Local Authority will need to be satisfied that any work is necessary and as a result will need you to have had an Occupational Therapist Assessment.  These can be arranged through the Local Authority Social Services Department.
